How Long Can a Baby Sleep in a Moses Basket?

How Long Can a Baby Sleep in a Moses Basket?

The Short Answer

Most babies can sleep in a moses basket from birth until they are around three to four months old, or until they reach approximately 9kg (20lbs) in weight — whichever comes first. Once your baby starts showing signs of rolling over or pushing up on their hands and knees, it is time to transition to a larger sleep space.

Why Moses Baskets Have a Weight and Age Limit

Moses baskets are designed specifically for newborns. Their compact, cosy shape mimics the snug feeling of the womb, which is why so many babies settle beautifully in them during those early weeks. However, as your baby grows stronger and more mobile, the shallow sides of a moses basket can become a safety concern. A baby who can push up or roll could potentially topple the basket or climb out.

Always check the manufacturer's weight limit for your specific basket — at The Lullaby Nest, our baskets are designed for newborns up to 9kg.

Signs Your Baby Has Outgrown Their Moses Basket

Rather than going purely by age or weight, watch for these signs that your baby is ready to move on:

  • They are beginning to roll from back to side
  • They can push up on their hands during tummy time
  • Their head or feet are touching the ends of the basket
  • They seem restless or uncomfortable in the space
  • They have reached or are approaching the weight limit

Making the Most of the Moses Basket Stage

Even though the moses basket stage is relatively short, it is one of the most precious periods of early parenthood. The portability of a moses basket means you can keep your newborn close during the day — in the living room while you rest on the sofa, or beside your bed at night for easy night feeds.

The Safe Sleep guidelines from the Lullaby Trust recommend that babies sleep in the same room as their parents for at least the first six months. A moses basket makes this beautifully simple.

Safe Sleep in a Moses Basket

To ensure your baby sleeps safely in their moses basket, follow these guidelines:

  • Always place your baby on their back to sleep
  • Use a firm, flat mattress that fits the basket snugly with no gaps
  • Keep the basket clear of loose bedding, pillows, and soft toys
  • Ensure the basket is placed on a stable, flat surface — never on a raised surface where it could fall
  • Keep the sleeping environment smoke-free
  • Maintain a comfortable room temperature of around 16–20°C

What Comes After a Moses Basket?

When your baby outgrows their moses basket, the natural next step is a bedside crib or a full-size cot. A bedside crib attaches to your bed and allows easy access for night feeds while keeping your baby in their own safe sleep space. A cot offers more room and can often be used until your child is around two to three years old.
